Similar in some respects to the species but with larger, thicker leaves. New spring growth is dark red, resulting in a striking contrast against older maturing green leaves. Introduced by Dr. Eugene Coffman (friend and plant enthusiast) of Bellevue Iowa after he received it from Bob Tomayer of Wavecrest Nursery, Michigan, hence its name. Abundant red fruits are suspended in a panicle on red pedicels. After 8 years our plants are 10-11' tall and 6' wide but will eventually mature rounded with maturity. Can be grown as a single stem tree form. Reported to us by Dr. Coffman to have survived -30°. Zone 4
