Prairie Classic is a naturally occuring hybrid, originally observed in a seedling block of V. rufidulum.  Based upon physical characteristics and other viburnums blooming at the same time capable of pollinating, the other suspected parent is believed to be that of V. prunifolium. After years of observing and evaluating this plant, we felt that the time was right to share this native gem with other viburnum enthusiasts.  The abundant inflorescences are borne in attractive flat-topped cymes of non-fragrant flowers in late May.  Summer foliage is an attractive dark green, leathery and disease resistant.  Fall foliage is a reliable kaliedoscope of red, green and yellow, finally turning a dark maroon with the plant maintaining an interior yellow glow.  Profuse egg-shaped summer fruits are green, transitioning in the fall to pink, to blue, and finally maturing to black.  All of these various colors can be seen in one fruit cluster at the same time.  The winter fruits are persistant and are effective until the following spring. Habit is compact and dense, maturing to a broad, upright oval with stiff branching with minimal suckering at the base.  Prairie Classic can be grown as a shrub but is also an excellent choice as a small ornamental tree since it maintains a central leader when young, making it easy to grow as a tree-form with little to no staking or pruning.  It has withstood all of the elements that the Plains have to offer, from drought and searing heat and humidity to frigid cold winters and ice storms.  Introduced by Gary and Susan Ladman, Classic Viburnums.  Zone 4
