Viburnum x bodnantense

Viburnum x bodnantense 'Dawn'

The hybrid V. x bodnantense is a cross of V. farreri x V. grandiflorum'Dawn' was selected from 10 seedlings by Charles Puddle, head gardener to Lord Aborconway at Bodnant Gardens, Wales around 1935.  Grows about 8-10' high and not quite as wide.  New shoots have red stems and emerging leaves are a bronzy-green with red petioles.  Leaves are longer than wide and deeply veined.  Pink buds very early in spring open to fragrant white flowers with a pink blush and dark purple-pink anthers.  Flowers appear in the spring on naked winter branches.  Red fruit in fall if blooms are not stricken by late spring frosts.  Spectacular reddish-purple fall color.  Like V. farreri and related cultivars ('Nanum' and 'Candidissima'), we suggest that 'Dawn' be planted where winter dormancy can be prolonged as long as possible to avoid premature spring blooming.  Zone 5
