Although rare in the trade, an excellent arrowwood and one of our favorites. Native from southern Onio to Missouri. Deam viburnum grows 5-6' tall in 8 years, ultimately reaching 8'x8'. Its habit features stiff, densely branched light gray shoots and bark. A striking and very obvious feature is the lustrous green foliage with a lacquer-like finish that prevails even during the hottest and driest summers. Unlike most other dentatums, the foliage is more circular and exhibits a somewhat wavy margin. Before opening, flower buds are displayed in a tight, raspberry-red ball that resemble actual raspberries. Flowers are 2-4" creamy-white, flat-topped cymes appearing in mid June. Abundant blue-black ¼" fruits are evident beginning in September and persistant until the following spring. Unlike other dentatums, the fruit is held above the foliage on attractive dark burgundy pedicels. Fall color is reddish-purple to orange-red.
Deam viburnum is being promoted as the 2012 GreatPlants® shrub of the year.
